The Department of Community Health and
Family Medicine (CHFM) was formed in 1971, representing family
medicine at the University of Florida College of Medicine. In
addition to the Residency Program, the Department sponsors
programs in rural medicine, community family medicine, behavioral
medicine, medical student education, student health, medical
humanities and medical ethics.
The Family Medicine Residency Program was established in 1973
as a joint affiliation between Shands at AGH and the University of
Florida College of Medicine. The program is designed to educate
family physicians to be expert clinicians. Graduates are fully
competent to handle the wide spectrum of problems encountered in
family medicine.
This
University of Florida residency is based in a community hospital -
Shands at AGH (pictured below). This arrangement has the advantage of combining
full-time academic faculty from the College of Medicine with
facilities for teaching primary care in a modern community
hospital and adjacent Family Medicine Center. Providing
birth-to-death healthcare for the entire family under the
supervision of expert faculty enables residents to develop the
special skills utilized in family medicine.
The faculty has a national reputation for teaching excellence,
publications and presentations.
The Social Sciences and Humanities Program teaches courses that
identify humanistic issues as they apply to medical practice.
Faculty from this program work with clinicians and humanists from
a diversity of disciplines and teach students at the undergraduate
medical school and resident level.
The faculty and residents are very involved in medical student
education. The Family Medicine Center serves as the primary
rotation site for a required third-year clerkship in family
medicine. In addition, the Department teaches courses in medical
ethics, physical diagnosis, medical history taking and medical
law.
As of 2007 our Family Medicine Residency Program has over 200 graduates, all of whom are board certified. |
