Gainesville
in North Central Florida, is the perfect spot for a person who

least 40 nature settings.

swimming, picnicking, boating and fishing.

Gainesville is a progressive city located in North
Central Florida with a population of about 110,000. Due to the
presence of the University of Florida and Santa Fe Community
College, the city offers a great number of activities combining
the best aspects of a metropolitan city with the hospitality of a
college town. The climate has distinct seasonal changes with
clear, crisp winters and typical Florida summers. Yearly
temperature averages a mild 70 degrees.
Every type of sport for the spectator or participant is
available in Gainesville. The University of Florida is home to
collegiate teams in football, basketball, baseball, golf, track,
tennis, swimming and gymnastics. Professional football is within
easy reach in Miami, Tampa and Jacksonville.
Gainesville has two public and three private golf courses and
maintains 27 parks featuring tennis, racquetball, swimming and
other organized recreation including volleyball and softball
leagues. Two recreation centers offer arts and crafts activities
as well as instructional clinics in many sports. |

For a city its size, Gainesville offers many
cultural events. Gainesville is the home of the critically
acclaimed Hippodrome Theater and the Florida Players of the
University of Florida. The Gainesville Civic Ballet and the
Gainesville Ballet Theater produce performances throughout the
year. Gainesville's Center for the Performing Arts presents the
finest in world-class entertainment from Broadway, opera and
dance, to the superstars of pop, jazz, classical and country

The nationally renowned Harn Museum of Art is
located next to the Florida's newest state Museum of Natural
History.
The city offers something for every musical taste, from outdoor
rock and jazz concerts to the university-sponsored symphony
orchestra, jazz band and marching band.
Each year, Santa Fe Community College sponsors the Spring Arts
Festival featuring fine arts, ceramic, leather and fabric art from
artisans around the nation. Gainesville's nearest Gulf Coast town,
Cedar Key, holds an annual Seafood and Arts Festival providing
delights for the palate as well as the eye.
The University of Florida with its
47,000 students forms the
center of Gainesville's educational opportunities, with more than
3,000 courses in 120 areas of instruction. Santa Fe Community
College offers a regular two-year curriculum as well as vocational
and technical training.
Many famous Florida attractions are within easy driving
distances of Gainesville for day trips or weekend get-aways.
Historic St. Augustine, the nation's oldest settlement, is only
one hour and a half from Gainesville; Walt Disney World and EPCOT
Center are only two hours away. Within a 100-mile radius are
Silver Springs, Sea World, the Daytona Speedway, the Daytona
Museum of Arts and Sciences, the Jacksonville Planetarium and the
Atlantic and Gulf beaches. |
