| The mission of the University of
Florida, Shands at AGH Family Medicine Residency Program
encompasses training, education, research, and patient care. The
Program is designed to train residents to be competent,
compassionate, ethical, and professional practitioners who provide
comprehensive care to their patients in a continuity of care model.
Emphasis is placed on practical and direct patient care-based
training in addition to didactic teaching to enhance the learning
environment. The Program endeavors to instill in residents the love
of lifelong learning and the tools to accomplish this goal. In education, the Family
Medicine Residency Program works with
the College of Medicine to mentor and teach medical students from
the University of Florida and provide them a rich learning
environment for their family medicine experience, both in the
outpatient and inpatient settings. Residents are exposed to
research initiatives, including clinical research, while allowing
them to participate directly in projects and encouraging them to
publish. The Program is committed to excellence in patient care,
both in the inpatient and outpatient settings, thereby modeling
good practice methods, practice management, staff relations,
introspection, communication, cooperation, and documentation. The
Family Medicine Residency Program is committed to support each
resident in his/her educational endeavors, whether the resident
selects a pure clinical path or moves on to fellowships, academic
medicine, or research.
Program Profile
The Residency Program has eight residents at each of three
levels, PGY (Post Graduate Year) I,
II and III, for a complement of 24 residents. There are no
plans to expand the number of Family Medicine residents at this
time. Fellowships are sponsored in Sports
Medicine and Hospitalist
Medicine.
