Site Information

Family Medicine at 4th Avenue is comprised of a primary office located in Gainesville as well as satellite Family Practice Medical Group building offices including Haile Plantation, Hampton Oaks, Eastside and Old Town. In addition, the Department also oversees all clinical activities at the University of Florida, Student Health Care Center which currently provides medical services to over 40,000 students. Our research team has the facilities, recruitment accessibility and faculty experience that is ideal for conducting a wide variety of clinical research. The research division within the Department has been in existence since 1986. We are competent in a wide variety of clinical trials and focus our efforts in studies in phase III and IV. Our physicians see upwards of 23,500 patients a year. The demographic and pathophysiologic diversity of our patients gives us a database rich with potential subjects.

Site History

Family Medicine at 4th Avenue was established in 1971 by the Department of Community Health and Family Medicine at the University of Florida to promote Family Medicine. As part of the University of Florida’s medical residency program, physicians-in-training participate in patient care under the supervision of faculty physicians. Our residency program is composed of 24 residents, 8 full time faculty, 8 board certified family physicians, a doctor in pharmacy, clinical psychologists, and social workers. The University of Florida faculty are known throughout the state, country, and world for their work in both the scholastic and medical fields.

Research Team

Our research team is comprised of highly qualified investigators, a full time study coordinator/RN, and a research assistant experienced in regulatory affairs.

  • Endocrinology (Diabetes & Obesity)

  • Rheumatology (Osteo-arthritis & joint pain)

  • Neurology (Migraines)

  • Psychiatry (Depression & Anxiety)

  • Pulmonary (Asthma, COPD & Allergy)

Patient Population

Out of approximately 23,500 patients a year, our population composition is as follows:

  • Gender:

    • 66% female 

    • 33% male

  • Race:

    • 49% Caucasian

    • 25% African American

    • 26% Other (Native Americans, Asians, Pacific Islanders, and Hispanic)

  • Age:

    • 7% 18-24

    • 19% 25-39

    • 29% 40-54

    • 32% 55+

Institutional Review Board (IRB)

We utilize the Western Institutional Review Board as our local IRB and University of Florida Institutional Review Board as a liaison with the WIRB. The Western IRB and the UF IRB are comprised of a multidisciplinary committee of medical and non-medical members.
